Cycling in the Context of Social Equality and Ecological Living

Cycling in the Context of Social Equality and Ecological Living
Workshops

About Event

Designed by Seda Ezgi Bulak and Çilem Akkaya on behalf of the Amed Women’s Bicycle Group, this workshop offers a holistic space for learning and experience, approaching bicycle use through the lenses of ecological living, social equality, and women’s freedom of movement in public spaces. Throughout the day, bodily awareness is supported through meditation, breathing, and stretching practices; meanwhile, drama activities, introductions, and experience-sharing sessions make participants’ personal and social relationships with bicycles visible. A collective discussion space is created around the ecological impacts of cycling, the role of sustainable transportation in urban life, and the empowerment of women’s mobility through bicycle use.

In the technical component of the workshop, bicycle types, proper bicycle selection, basic maintenance, and safe riding rules are covered. Presentations and video screenings deepen participants’ understanding of the ecological contributions of cycling at both individual and societal levels. While participants experience the positive effects of cycling on physical and mental well-being, they also reflect together on strategies to support more women in using bicycles in the city. Recommendations for local governments—such as bicycle lanes, safety, accessibility, and sustainable transportation policies—form an important part of the discussion.

By the end of the workshop, it is aimed that participants strengthen their awareness of cycling, develop policy suggestions to increase bicycle use in the city, and contribute to women’s freer movement in public spaces from an ecological living perspective.
