The patriarchal system, in order to maintain its sovereignty and domain of power, separates women and men through sharp gender codes in socialization processes. This artificial separation confines both genders to stereotypical identities that contradict their own human essence. While masculinity is identified with power and domination, femininity is defined by passivity, submission, and secondariness. This structural inequality constitutes a fundamental obstacle not only to the liberation of women but to the liberation of society as a whole.
The aim of this workshop, designed by Suzan İşbilen and Zeynep Sipçik from the Rosa Women's Association, is to make visible, through concrete examples, the domination created by gender roles on both female and male identity, and to develop collective awareness by opening these patterns up for discussion with participants. The goal is, in particular, to enable women to recognize the mechanisms of social pressure upon themselves and to analyze the structural relations that reproduce these pressures.
During the workshop, we will discuss together, through examples from everyday life, how gender roles pose obstacles to liberation; a space for collective reflection will be opened on how liberation is possible only by freeing oneself from these roles and developing an active struggle against this inequality.
Within a context where peace discussions are being conducted, by addressing the violence, hierarchy, and domination relations produced by feminine and masculine roles, the aim is to create a ground for discussion that will contribute to the mindset transformation necessary for strengthening societal peace.
This workshop aims to contribute to the construction of an egalitarian and free form of relationship between genders, freeing societal relations from the dialectic of oppressor-oppressed.
