Having completed his primary and high school years in Diyarbakır, Aktaş began his undergraduate education in the Mining Engineering department at Istanbul Technical University but could not complete his university education due to his imprisonment. He spent 31 years and 3 months of his life in various prisons due to his political activities. Aktaş continued working for societal peace and freedom as a member of the secretariat for Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı Prison during the last 10 years of his detention.
