In this panel, we want to reflect together on the power of art to carry social memory, and on the contribution that the courage and effort to make the invisible and the deliberately unseen visible make to peace and freedom.
Although art is often seen merely as a form of expression, it is in fact a powerful domain that records what societies experience, transforms social pain into a shared language, and helps foster empathy between different groups. For this reason, the positions and responsibilities of artists in the face of social issues hold a critical place in building the language of a peaceful shared life.
In the panel, we will discuss how art can accompany processes of memory and confrontation, how the language of peace can be built through art, the social responsibility of the artist, and the potential of art to create a common ground of emotion in polarized societies. Within a framework ranging from theater to cinema, and from personal experiences to social testimony, we aim to open for discussion the power of art not only to reflect but also to transform.
