Decolonization of Peace

Decolonization of Peace
Workshops

About Event

For the resolution of collective and identity-based (ethnic, national, religious, class, gender, etc.) sociopolitical problems, especially in the context of the "Kurdish question," a peace based on social freedom must be established; this peace must be purged of colonial characteristics, colors, and forms, both at the level of political discourse and in terms of legitimate individual and collective demands for rights. In other words, a "decolonized peace" should be aimed for. This is necessary, above all, for the subjectivity of the victimized and oppressed party in constructing a "regime of truth."

For an "honorable" peace, possessing the power and possibility to realize social freedom, requires a decolonial discourse that problematizes and eliminates the hierarchical relationship, forms of power, and subjugation between the parties. This workshop will focus on the need and possibility of "democratizing and reconciling peace," and will demonstrate, through a deconstructive assessment, that this is possible with a decolonial language/discourse.

For example, the fact that the peace process and democratic society are defined by state authorities as the "Terror-Free Turkey Process" is a colonial discourse. As is known, the use of language and definitions are crucial both for the sustainability of the process and for the recognition of mutual rights and demands. In short, the political and social language used for the peace process as a "discourse system" determines the political and ideological positions of the parties. Because peace begins with the way language and dialogue are used.

This workshop, led by Mustafa Zengin, aims to discuss with participants what kind of language and discourse is needed above all else for a rights-based, just, and social peace process.
